Packing Marsh

In 2023 Exo Environmental installed a series of brushwood fences on Packing Shed Island and Cob Marsh Island, located off Mersea island, within the Blackwater estuary, Essex. The project was carried out on behalf of the Mersea Harbour Protection Trust and was implemented to protect areas of saltmarsh from the planned recharge of dredged sand from Harwich Harbour. A further measure was to prevent this material from washing into the main Mersea harbour entrance and impact safe navigation.

Recently local drone pilot and Mersea resident Jim Pullen inspected the structures installed 3 years ago to check on their condition and ensure they were still functioning as they should. The answer was a resounding yes! As can be seen from the picture below the brushwood fencing is still intact, and the saltmarsh behind has been protected from the recharged sand.

It is great to see that the structure and design layout is still functioning as it should and is a testament to our expertise in nature-based solutions and natural marine management.
