PEA - Phase 1 Habitat Survey
PEA
At Exo Environmental we are experts at carrying out Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA’s). Otherwise known as phase 1 habitat survey’s, they are designed to establish the ecological baseline of sites, presence of protected habitats and species. Usually, PEA surveys are carried out on areas where significant construction activity is planned, such as house building, removal of water control infrastructure or demolition of buildings to name just a few.
We have recently conducted a number of PEA surveys for Landmarc support services across numerous MOD estates.
In March 2026, our team visited two sites at RAF Holbeach, in Lincolnshire, to inspect access tracks and range markers which are planned for renovation. This involved surveying a range of habitat types from terrestrial perennial grassland, upper and mid saltmarsh and brackish dykes and ditches.
Additionally, in April 2026 Exo also conducted 3 PEA surveys at the STANTA training area in Norfolk. These sites were earmarked for removal of in situ infrastructure. The sites were a mix of modified grassland, acid grassland and scattered small copses of woodland.

Following the surveys, the results were written up detailing the possible impact to protected species and on-site habitats from the planned works and any subsequent follow up surveys which may be needed before works starts as well as recommended mitigation measures to implement to remove risk.
If you have a development site and need a PEA survey conducted please don’t hesitate to contact us and make sure to give us a follow on our socials.
